While winter has arrived for many of us, the weather is somewhat unpredictable anymore. With warmer seasons the autumn weather seems to last a bit longer in some regions nowadays. That said, fall lawn care is essential to a healthy turf. Just because it is getting cooler out, doesn't mean the work is through. Each fall, there are certain lawn care needs that you can have done to achieve that healthy green lawn that looks beautiful.

Probably the one of the most overlooked things one can do is a soil test. A lot of people are not even aware, or think about ever having soil tested. Having a soil test done can identify the proper levels of fertilizer that the lawn may need, and any problems with the acidity of the soil (pH). If the soil is extremely acidic, then one will need an application of lime, more than likely in both the spring, and the fall. The lower the pH, the more acidic the soil is. One needs to know the ph of the soil, as well as what types of fertilizer to use, but never fertilize without knowing the condition of the soil. One could do more harm than good in some cases.

Autumn is one of the best times to fertilize. If you only fertilize your lawn once a year then this is the ideal season to do it. I personal recommend at the very least two times a year, once in the spring, and again in the fall. Once to green it up, and once to keep it green. When you apply fertilizer in the fall you'll want to use an N-P-K ratio (Nitrogen, Phosphorous, and Potassium) of 3:1:2 or 4:1:2. It's not as important to match the ratios perfectly as it is to use them as a guideline. When in complete doubt, use a well balanced fertilizer.

So, now you know the condition of your soil, and you picked up your fertilizer of choice at the local hardware store. Check the fertilizer bag or container for information about how many square feet a bag will yield and what setting the spreader should be adjusted to. The best way to apply your fertilizer and lime is using a spreader. These can often be found at any hardware store or even you're local Walmart. I bought an inexpensive one for about at the hardware store 5 years ago and it still works great.

Something to consider prior to fertilizing and applying lime to the lawn, one really should aerate it. This is a great way to promote healthy growth of grass and prevent vegetation, and soil compaction. Aerating your lawn is an easy task that anyone can do, but if you prefer to have it done by a professional, ask your LCC about aeration today.

Lawn over seeding is another really important thing to be done in the autumn, if you want your lawn to stay thick and lush. By over seeding you can ensure that your lawn will have a long lustrous life. Over seeding will help replace grass loss as shoots die off.

One more tip, is to NOT leave leafs that have fallen to the ground on the grass. It is simply not possible to grow a healthy turfgrass under a mat of leafs. Not to mention the unsightly effects this has on a lawns aesthetics.

Your lawn, like all living things needs essential elements such as oxygen to survive. When one leaves leafs on the turf, it also will hinder the effectiveness of any herbicides, or fertilizers they may add. Leaf removable is an important task when it comes to your lawns health. Not to mention the benefits it has towards the overall aesthetics of your property. Be sure to ask your lawn care company (LCC) about leaf clean up, most do offer this service, and it is an investment worth making.

So this fall before you put all the tools away make sure you spend some time caring for your lawn. Or, if you are like most people nowadays, and use a LCC, be sure to check with your provider that all is being done that needs to be done. You'll be glad you did next spring when you are the envy of the neighborhood with your beautifully, lush green lawn.

What are fiber optic visual fault locators?

Fiber optic visual fault locators are also called visual fault finders. They are low cost, battery powered fiber test tools to find fiber imperfections, fiber breaks (fiber cutting), microbends and macrobends in fiber optic cable links. Visual fault locators come in a pen shape or handheld style with a fiber optic connector adapter to accept different connectors such as FC, ST, SC, LC or even MTRJ.

How do they work?

Visual fault locators inject a highly visual red color laser light into optical fiber cables. The red light can be switched between continuous mode (continuous wave) or pulse mode with a 1~2 Hz frequency and 60ms duration.

The light source is usually a high power, extra long life, class 2 laser diode at 635nm. Other available wavelengths are 650nm and 670nm.

The fault locater injects light into fiber cables through a built-in connector adapter. Two types of connector adapters are available: 2.5mm and 1.25mm in diameter. The 2.5mm version accepts FC, SC and ST connectors and the 1.25mm version accepts LC and MU connectors.

The fiber installation technician can then look at the length of the fiber cable and where glowing or blinking light is seen, a break, microbending or macrobending exists.

The tool can be used as a stand-alone first-line basic troubleshooting tool or in conjunction with an OTDR to pinpoint faults. It can also be used as a continuity tester.

The construction of a laser fault locater

Laser fault locater is a simple and reliable tool. It consists of laser light source, pulse modulation circuit board, light coupling lens and fiber optic connector adapter.

Applications

Fiber optic visual fault locators are regularly used for testing and finding breaks in LANs, FDDI, ATM, fiber data links and loops, telephones, ships and other vessels. Its industry applications include fiber optic networks, telecoms network and CATV network maintenance.

Manufacturer brand names and their corresponding quality

Wilcom, Fluke, Noyes, Greenlee, Ideal, Wavetek all supply high quality visual fault locators. Our preference is Wilcom's products since they have been in this market the longest time and their products are generally very high quality.

Understanding the specifications

1. Fiber distance

The fiber distance spec tells the longest fiber length where you can still see the leakage light without difficulty. This spec is determined by the laser light power. The industry standard spec is 10km for multimode fibers and 5km for single mode fibers.

2. Wavelength

Wavelength is not a critical spec. 635nm, 650nm and 670nm will all work just fine.

3. Output power

Output power is an important spec for visual fault locators. The higher output power, the longer fiber distance it can support. This spec is usually 0.5mW coupled to single mode fibers and 2mW to free space (which means no fiber coupling, just the light output from the tester's connector adapter).

4. Fiber mode

All visual fault locators can work with both single mode and multimode fibers. Since multimode fiber has a 50um or 62.5um core, which is much bigger than single mode fiber's 9um core, more light power can be coupled in to multimode fibers. That translates to longer fiber distance for multimode fibers which is usually 10km. For single mode fiber, however, fiber distance is only 5km.

5. Modulation frequency: CW and 2Hz

Human eyes are much more sensitive to a blinking light than to a steady light. So visual fault locators provides two operating modes: continuous wave and pulse light.

In most cases, fiber optic installation technicians prefer the pulse light mode which turns the laser source on and off in 2Hz or 1Hz frequency.

6. Battery

Usually two AAA alkalescence batteries

Why is VoIP Replacing PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network)? Fiber Optic Communication Tutorial

Why is VoIP Replacing PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network)? Fiber Optic Communication Tutorial

The History of Traditional PSTN

The traditional PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network) has been continuously improving since its inception by Alexander Bell. There are valid reasons why PSTN exists in its current state.

What is Ring-Down

At first, Bell developed a ring-down circuit, which means no dialing of numbers. Instead, a physical wire connected two phone devices. You simply pick up the phone and the other person is on the other end directly and there was no ringing at all.

Basically this structure fell flat when more and more users joined the network. Since based on this concept, you will need a wire between any two person who wants to have a phone call. With more customers joining in, this became a messed up mesh network which was very costly and impossible to construct and manage.

The Inception of Switch

That was the time when the concept of a switch came to play. Each user only needed one cable to connect to the central office switch, the switch can then connect the user to any other users.

Initially, the switch was manually operated by a telephone operator. The operator connected the caller to whoever he wanted to call by manually connecting the voice path.

Later, the manual labor switch was replaced by electronic switches which was much faster and had much more capacity.

Limitations of PSTN

PSTN has actually done a pretty job: switching voice calls, that is, until now. With more data traffic than voice traffic on the network, the traditional PSTN network just is not flexible enough to keep up with the new technologies and customer requirements. Here are some simple explanations.

1. Data traffic has overtaken voice traffic. The current status is: data traffic is actually running on top of networks that were built for voice. However, data traffic has its own characteristics which makes it simply not efficient running on top of a voice network.

The industry trend is to build networks with a data-centric approach. Then all traffics including data, voice and video can all run on this network.

2. PSTN is not capable of keeping up with customers' new demands. PSTN was designed as a one-company show. Only vendors of the PSTN equipment can develop applications for that equipment. With modern ever changing demands, it is simply impossible for any one company to meet all the needs of all the customers. A more open infrastructure which allows many vendors to provide applications is required.

3. Current PSTN cannot support Data, Video and Voice altogether. In the backbone of PSTN, the convergence of data, voice and video is has been happening for fairly long time. However, it still takes some time to make it to all the homes. With high speed broadband access, such as DSL, cable or wireless, the convergence of data, video and voice to the home is finally happening.

4. PSTN was simply not designed for carrying data traffic. Because the bearer channels, call control and service logic are tightly bound in one closed platform, it is not possible to make minor changes that might improve audio quality.

Are You With the Best Direct Sales Company to Work For?

Are You With the Best Direct Sales Company to Work For?

There are a few things to consider when milling over the decision of joining an organization. I've listed below a few factors to keep in mind while making your decision.

o Product/Opportunity: This is something I talk about quite a bit. Have you ever tried to do something you're just not that in to?

How did that turn out? Chances are, not very good.

On the other hand, if this you can get behind the company and you're are thrilled with the Value of the Product line, you'll do VERY WELL! Rule #1, you have go to Believe.

o Compensation: Let's be honest, we are all in business to make money. There are so many different structures and comp plans that sometimes I get confused.

I personally like to make BIG COMMISSIONS! You know, be able to make k-k per deal. And, of course a healthy Residual Income is always nice. I prefer Top Tier Direct Sales. Normally Top Tier companies allow for big up front Commissions.

o ManageMent: Who's at the head of this beast? Is there a track record of success with the manageMent team involved? What are the intentions of the future success of this company?

At the end of the day a business (including your own) is only as good as the person behind the wheel. This may be the most important factor of choosing the Best Direct Sales Company to Work for you.

o Training: We are all overwhelmed by the amount of conference calls and webinars available to us.

You want to make sure you are getting GOOD information and training that you can immediately begin to impleMent and see results. Nothing is more frustrating than spending an hour getting excited about something only to be left with more questions.

Make sure your Direct Sales Company has an interest in training you to be successful in the INDUSTRY not just that particular Product/Opportunity.

o Mission StateMents: This is something we've all heard hundreds of times. However, underneath all of the hype of getting you to Believe in the companies values lies the overall direction of the company.

If the leader of your company continues to promote the same ideology of the basic principles of the company you are probably with a proven winner. On the other hand, if the leader's direction changes with the wind I suggest jumping ship before it gets lost at sea.

I hope there has been some insight gained when trying to determine whether or not you're with The Best Direct Sales Company to Work for.

I'm not talking about taking a week's paid vacation either. I'm talking about being able to do this whenever you want and yes, your income still keeps coming in. This is what we all want right?

Do you have access to a passive income opportunity?

It used to be that in order to have passive income you had to own a business, real estate or some sort of fund that paid you on a regular basis. Think about Donald Trump. He has a TON of passive income. Every single month people have to pay their rent for being in his properties. Or, think of the person who owns your local McDonalds. This person too has passive income coming in every month. Every time you go buy a Big Mac you have just lined their pockets.

Now, the draw backs of the previous two examples are the amount of Capital required to get started with either of these opportunities. Even inexpensive real estate 'aint cheap. And a McDonalds...be prepared to throw down close to Million!!

Yup, it's Gonna Cost You Million..

to own the McDonalds. Did that just take you out of the running for a passive Income Opportunity? NO WAY!! It's easier now than ever for you to get involved with an opportunity that will produce MASSIVE amounts of passive income for you.

In fact, some of the MOST PROFITABLE passive income opportunities will cost you no more than k and as cheap as k. Can you believe that? An chance for you to Plug in to a Passive income opportunity that will pay you whether you go to work or not for less than 5% of the McDonalds.

That's what I'm talking about! Get involved, get set up, do the work once and get paid for LIFE! Some of the most successful people out there, and I'm talking top 1% of the tax bracket, are utilizing a passive income opportunity just like this. You know what the most exciting part of this is....

This Same Opportunity is Available to YOU!

Today is the day you stop "thinking about it" and start acting on it. If you are not living the Life you want and making the amount of money you want, you deserve to be introduced to how great life and business can be. Life doesn't have to be a grind and business doesn't have to run your life.

There is a better way. All you have to do is decide! I know you will, and I can't wait to see you blossom!

Does the Sony PRS600 Touch Edition eReader Have What it Takes to Challenge the Kindle 2?

Does the Sony PRS600 Touch Edition eReader Have What it Takes to Challenge the Kindle 2?

Sony's new Touch Edition eReader is arguably the biggest current challenger to Amazon's Kindle 2. The following is based on my impressions after using the Sony PRS600 eReader for a few weeks. I also have a few opinions on how it compares to the Kindle 2.

Does the Sony PRS600 Touch Edition eReader Have What it Takes to Challenge the Kindle 2?

Does the Sony PRS600 Touch Edition eReader Have What it Takes to Challenge the Kindle 2?

Does the Sony PRS600 Touch Edition eReader Have What it Takes to Challenge the Kindle 2?

Does the Sony PRS600 Touch Edition eReader Have What it Takes to Challenge the Kindle 2?

Does the Sony PRS600 Touch Edition eReader Have What it Takes to Challenge the Kindle 2?

First of all, let's list a few of the specs of Sony's new touch screen eReader:

6" touch screen; 600 x 800 pixels; 8 gray scales Freehand note taking and annotating, highlighting; use included stylus or virtual keyboard 512 MB memory onboard will hold up to 350 ebooks Accepts Memory Stick Pro Duo or SD card Single font adjustable to five sizes Battery lasts for up to two weeks or 7,500 page turns Built-in dictionary Available in silver, black or red Formats supported: PDF, Adobe Digital Editions, epub, mp3, Microsoft Word files, BBeBThe PRS 600 comes with a neoprene carry bag. You would probably want to get a good cover though, as the included carrying bag does not provide much protection. You also get a USB cable to connect to your Computer and a quick start guide. If you want an AC adaptor you will need to purchase that separately. You can probably do without though as eInk based eReaders like this one have very good battery life. A full charge does take about four hours, during which time the eReader must be connected to your powered on Computer's USB port.

Sony also announced a few new features to go with their new eReaders. For one thing, Sony eBook Store software is now Mac compatible. In addition Sony eBook readers will be supporting Adobe Digital Editions, which means you can purchase ebooks from sources other than the Sony eBook Store. Ebooks in the Sony eBook Store will also be offered in Adobe Digital Editions so that owners of other eBook readers can purchase ebooks from Sony if they are also compatible with ADE. Finally, you will be able to borrow ebooks from public libraries that use Overdrive as their supplier for digital media.

Being able to check out ebooks from your local library and read them on your eReader sounds like a really good feature, but at the current time it is somewhat limited. Most libraries only have a few titles to choose from. The Los Angeles Public Library system for example only has a little more than 200 titles at this time; and that is a large library system. Libraries also have a finite number of "copies" of each title so most ebooks will have a waiting list to get on before you can check one out.

The Sony PRS 700, which the Sony Touch Edition replaces, was notorious for its bad glare which made reading outdoors or in bright light difficult. This is a common problem with touch screens, as is reduced contrast. The PRS 600 is not quite as bad as the PRS 700, but there is some glare. Contrast is also not as good as on most eReaders without touch screens. When reading outdoors I found the Touch Edition to be quite readable in either full sun or full shade. Where I had problems was in partial shade; it was hard to find an angle that did not show glare patterns on the screen. Indoors I found the worst glare when reading beside a table lamp, or when reading in bed with a side table lamp.

Glare issues aside, the touch screen does make navigation easier. Page turns are accomplished by either using a finger swipe on the touch screen or by using the buttons at the bottom of the eReader. The finger swipe takes some getting use to. The Sony Touch is rather difficult to use with one hand while reading in bed. Sony could have made this easier by placing page turn buttons on the sides of the eReader rather than on the bottom.

The touch screen also comes in handy for taking notes and highlighting. You can use the stylus to scribble in the margins if you like. You can also make annotations on PDF's, but not while they are zoomed. The default PDF view is usually too small to read as a whole page is fitted onto the screen, which on the PRS 600 is a little small for this purpose. You can use the zoom-in function on PDF's and then pan the image around using your finger on the touch screen.

You also have the ability to group your ebooks together in "collections" of titles based on author, category, etc. You can only do this from the Computer however, not from the eReader itself.

On the whole I have enjoyed using the Sony Touch Edition. There are, however, a couple of areas where I think it falls somewhat short when compared to the Kindle 2.

First of all is the not so small matter of content. If you remove the Google public domain ebooks from the Sony eBook Store you will be left with about 1/3 of the number of titles that the Kindle store has. Yes, you can purchase ebooks from other online eBook stores, but mostly they seem to have pretty much the same titles at similar prices. When I have compared eBook prices the Kindle store almost always is less expensive for a given title.

Then of course there is Kindle's wireless connection. Of course purchasing ebooks wirelessly is very convenient, but the wireless connection also makes the Kindle 2 much more versatile. If you want to research something you are reading you can access Wikipedia or search on the internet. The Kindle browser is a bit clunky, but if you need to access the net or check your email, it's there for you. For me this is a much more valuable feature than the touch screen. Sony has also announced the Daily Edition eReader, which should be out by the end of 2009 and should come with a wireless connection. However, Sony's wireless will only let you connect to the Sony eBook Store; no internet and no wireless connections to other eBook stores. At least that is the information that has been released about the Daily Edition so far.

In conclusion, I do like the Sony. I found the glare to sometimes be distracting, but not so bad as to be a deal breaker. You may feel differently though, so it might be a good idea to have a hands-on look if you have a Sony Style store near you. I think Kindle's wireless connectivity is a much more compelling feature to have than Sony's touch screen though. And unless you mainly want to read current bestsellers (which are mostly .99 everywhere) or Google's public domain offerings, you may find that you will have less reading material to choose from with Sony's eReaders than with a Kindle 2, and it will probably cost you more.

Does the Sony PRS600 Touch Edition eReader Have What it Takes to Challenge the Kindle 2?

Why Choose Vinyl Replacement Windows?

Why Choose Vinyl Replacement Windows?

Vinyl replaceMent windows are by far the most popular of any type replaceMent window on the market today; with a few good reasons I might add. Though not a new manner or material for the construction of windows, vinyl ranks as the top material type for many reasons. Price above all else is, probably the biggest reason it hangs on at the top of the list, but not the only one to be sure. The material has some truly advanTAGeous properties that make it very attractive as material for the construction of replaceMent windows

Why Choose Vinyl Replacement Windows?

Why Choose Vinyl Replacement Windows?

Why Choose Vinyl Replacement Windows?

Why Choose Vinyl Replacement Windows?

Why Choose Vinyl Replacement Windows?

Using polyvinyl carbonate gave manufactures the ability to better insulate the core structure of the window, allowing it to have an overall better thermo efficiency rating then most other types of materials used. It was the only material used industry wide that was able to meet or exceed the set industry standards for energy efficiency requireMents when it was first introduced.  By meeting and exceeding the standards made it very popular with manufactures as well as consumers. Even the least expensive Vinyl windows will have an energy star rating, which signifies that the window will save consumers money on energy bills as well as be more environmentally friendly.

The energy star program was first developed in 1992 by the federal government as a means of testing and rating those products that are environmentally friendly and more energy efficient.  Products ranging from building materials to house hold appliances are scrutinized by the programs standards and given the energy star seal of approval if they pass.

The use of Vinyl as a material for windows is very cost effective as well. Using the innovative material cut the production cost of manufacturing windows dramatically which was a plus for everyone, especially home owners. Though usually thought of as a replacement window option early on, they have gained market share and respect in the industry proving that this "plastic" could be a fine material to use even for new construction

Vinyl windows are easy to install, so much so the average DIY person can handle the Job with a few tools and a short learning curve. Actually the percenTAGe of do-it-yourself installations for vinyl windows is probably in the 50 percent range if not more.

New or replacement windows made of vinyl come from a plethora of manufactures in many different sizes and configurations to meet most any need. Chances are that if you go to your local home improvement store, you will find a window that will fit the need you have without having to special order. But if not, special order is usually always an option with most major manufactures of. Production of special order vinyl windows is usually far quicker than for any other type of material used.

It once was that vinyl windows only came in one color, basic white, today that is not the case. For a bit more money, manufactures of can add pigments to the vinyl production process to match your color needs. This process when first implemented had some issues with color fade, but the process has been refined to where color fade is of little concern. Texture can also be added to the vinyl to simulate wood or other materials that you might want.
